
Adkins was raised by a young single mother in various working-class communities of London. She was fascinated by contemporary pop songs as a child and was able to play the clarinet and guitar. It wasn't until her teens when she was introduced to Etta James, a rhythm and blues singerand other musicians in the late 20th century which was when she began thinking about a career in music. While she was being trained at a secondary institution for performing arts, which was funded by the government when a friend began uploading songs Adkins had composed on Myspace. Her music eventually attracted the attention of recording companies and in 2006, shortly after her graduation she signed a contract with XL Recordings.
